During World War II, the transition camp at Terezín was a vital, creative haven for Jewish artists of all kinds. At least, that’s the story the Nazis told to the world. The reality was far darker. On this special edition of Soundcheck, we hear a survivor’s memories of the so-called “art camp” – which really did produce some enduring music and art. And The Nash Ensemble from England will play some of the music created in the camp at Terezín.

Exploring the traditions of Passover

At the customary Seder dinner celebrating the Jewish festival of Passover, the evening's youngest participant, usually a child, recites the Ma Nishtana, the Four Questions, which begin with, "Why is this night different from all other nights?" In her lovely and thoughtful new gift book, Why Is This Night Different From All Other Nights? The Four Questions Around the World, Ilana Kurshan uses these traditional Four Questions to explore the astonishing variety and diversity of Jewish settlements throughout the world and throughout history.

This slim but informative volume focuses, in turn, on nearly two dozen languages used by Jews throughout history, from Afrikaans to Yiddish. Each section poses the Four Questions of Passover in a different language (with transliterations as necessary), and follows these translations with a two- to three-page history of the Jewish people who use (or used) this language. Accompanying photographs, prints and other artwork provide either contemporary or historical glimpses into Jewish life around the world.

Given the worldwide history of Jews' suppression and persecution, it's not surprising that many of the included anecdotes are somber ones, particularly as the text outlines the numbers of European Jews before and after the Holocaust. Kurshan balances these sobering accounts, however, with discussions of how Jewish people - both singly and collectively - have affected culture, economy and civilization in virtually every corner of the world. Many stories also find comfort and hope in Zionism, as many historically persecuted Jewish minorities have found safety by immigrating to Israel.

Anyone interested in the rich and fascinating history of Jewish culture will find something to treasure here. Perhaps the best audience for Kurshan's book, though, are those young people who are ready to ask more than just the traditional Four Questions of Passover, ready to explore their people's abundant and diverse, troubling and rewarding history.

Three Kings Day Parade & Community Celebration

Celebrated by Hispanics all over the world Three Kings Day (El Dia de los Reyes), also known as Epiphany, is the last official day of the Christmas Season—or the 12th day of Christmas, as the song goes—commemorating the three Magi (Gaspar, Melchior and Balthazar).
According to an old legend based on a Bible story, these three kings saw, on the night when Christ was born, a bright star, followed it to Bethlehem and found there the Christ child and presented it with gold, frankincense and myrrh. On the night before El Dia de los Reyes, Hispanic children may leave their shoes near their beds before going to bed, many times filling them with hay for the kings’ camels in the hopes that a present would be left behind for them from the Three Kings.
Celebration of the day may include parades with camels, family gatherings and big meals. For dessert, they may eat the Rosca de Reyes – a crown-shaped sweetbread decorated with candied fruit. Inside the sweetbread, there may be one or more figurines of the baby Jesus and whoever finds the figurine is supposed to invite everyone to his or her house for Candelaria – the last celebration of the Christmas season.

The Three Kings Day Parade is a colourful and festive Christmas affair, Latin American-style, that fills the streets of Spanish Harlem every year. A community celebration offering family entertainment is held a few days later at el Museo del Barrio.
The Three Kings Day Parade in the largely Hispanic neighbourhood of East Harlem New York is organised by Latin museum of art El Museo del Barrio. It starts at 10am from the corner of 106th Street and 5th Ave and terminates at 106th St and 5th St. The parts of the three kings are usually played by local community celebrities and figureheads, who lead the parade for a good two hours around ten or 12 city blocks. The walk is followed by a programme of storytelling, music and toy distribution

James Olmos, actor and community activist, is the Co-Producer of Latino Book & Family Festival, a weekend event that promotes literacy, culture and education in a fun environment for the whole family. The festival is held in key Hispanic markets across the country.

The Latino Book & Family Festival was launched in 1997 in Los Angeles to promote literacy, culture and education and to provide people of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to celebrate the diversity of the multicultural communities in the United States in a festival atmosphere.

Today, the Festival is hosted in several major Latino markets across the U.S. including Houston, Dallas, Chicago and Los Angeles. Future expansion plans will take the Festival to New York City, Miami, the San Francisco Bay Area and many other major Latino markets.

WebJunction - Spanish Outreach revamped relaunched for 2010!!

I just got notified that WebJunction has revamped and relaunched the Spanish Outreach course that some of us took in April 2007, presented by Jean Kaleda, at the Huntington Station Branch Library.

Here is the link to WebJunction's April newsletter which contains info on the course and other interesting Webinars being offered (i.e. Serving Today's Older Adults). The Spanish Outreach course is being offered through April at half price ($20-a real bargain!), for a four hour course. If your library won't pay for it, it is well worth investing in for yourself.

Would anyone be interested in doing this as a group? At our Selden branch we have a computer lab with 20 computers and projector. We could gather, watch together, then discuss.

Assaulted Dream (Asalto al Sueño), documentary

Here is some information about the documentary Assaulted Dream (Asalto al Sueño) by German filmmaker Uli Stelzner. It is about the human rights crisis for migrants in southern Mexico as they travel to the United States. We have a showing scheduled at Middle Country Public Library for Friday, 7pm, July 16th. It is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. There will be a discussion following the film, led by a Human Rights activist. The film's intention is not to discuss the political sides of immigration, but to demonstrate the daily lives and sufferings of migrants.

Where to learn a new language on Long Island

Plenty of Long Island organizations offer classes in Spanish, French and Italian - some even give lessons in Eastern European and Asian languages as well.

A vacation is a wonderful excuse to learn another language. Or maybe you want to connect with your heritage. Plenty of Long Island organizations offer classes in Spanish, French and Italian - some even give lessons in Eastern European and Asian languages as well.

Classes are generally held once per week over several months, and students are clustered by proficiency level. Groups whose lessons emphasize conversation will often welcome newcomers in the mid-cycle. In others, you'll get a taste of culture and history along with your serving of vowels, verbs and nouns. Be sure to ask about family classes and those geared toward kids.

POLISH

Copiague has a vibrant Polish history - as evidenced by Polish delis, restaurants and bakeries that can still be found in town today. Learn the basics of Polish with Izabela Wojcicki and Marta Wesolowski at their weekly class. "You don't have to have an ear for languages," says Wojcicki. "But you will come out being able to carry on or follow a simple conversation after the first semester." For beginners.

HADASSAH HEBREW

Cost: $36 ($25 members)

Organizers say those who have a basic knowledge of Hebrew will build on that base to be able to comfortably read, write and converse in the language. For advanced adults.

YIDDISH

Cost: $86 ($72 members)

If you can read the Hebrew alphabet, you're welcome to join this adult group, which will, among other lessons, read and discuss "Fiddler on the Roof" in the original Yiddish by Sholom Aleichem. For advanced adults.

RUSSIAN

When / where: 6-7 p.m. Wednesdays or 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays, Sunflower Center, 262 Glen Head Rd., Glen Head, 516-277-1515, sunflower-center.com

Cost: $25 (group class), $40 private lesson

The Sunflower Center hosts several classes in conversational and beginner Russian. "These are small groups, usually not more than six people," says Marina Terentiev, owner and director. You can also take private lessons. For beginners-advanced.

IRISH

When / where: 7:15-10 p.m. Thursdays, Gerry Tobin Irish Language School, 27 Locust Ave., Babylon, 631-957-7776, scoilgaeilge.org

Cost: Free

Students start by learning basic conversations and progress to Irish language reading, says instructor Patrick Clifford. For beginners of all ages.

GERMAN

When / where: Beginning class for adults, 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday; advanced adults 7:15-8:45 p.m. Monday; kids' lessons 4:30-6 p.m. Saturdays at Stony Brook University through Deutsche Sprachschule Long Island / German Language School Long Island, 631-589-9426, dssli.org

Cost: $30 per month

Adults who take German lessons typically want to visit Germany or come from German backgrounds, says school Principal Christa Siegel-Dittmar. Lessons incorporate aspects of German culture, too. For beginner-advanced students of all ages.

GREEK

When / where: Ongoing lessons for adults and families meet 6-7:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday; 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday program for kids in kindergarten through Grade 8; St. Paraskevi Greek Orthodox Church, 1 Shrine Place, Greenlawn, 631-261-7272, stparaskevi.org

Cost: Varies. $750 for family of four taking two classes per week for a semester; $550 for kid's program September-May.

The evening program breaks up students by skill level, tailoring lessons to student interest and needs. The more structured children's program teaches reading, writing and speech as well as folk dancing, Greek history and other aspects of Hellenic tradition. For beginner-advanced students of all ages.

Also: The Greek Orthodox Church of the Hamptons offers language classes for children as well as private tutoring for all ages (111 St. Andrews Rd., Southampton, 631-283-6169).

HINDI

"We teach simple phrases, how to carry on a conversation, and about the culture and the history," says instructor and center religious leader Swami Adrish Anandn. Lessons are flexible and can touch on culture, meditation, yoga and religion. For beginners of all ages.

CHINESE (MANDARIN)

When / where: 7-8:30 p.m. Mondays for 10 sessions beginning March 8, Garden City High School, 170 Rockaway Ave., 516-478-1070, www.gardencity.k12.ny.us

Cost: $75 ($60 residents)

Offered through the continuing education program. For adult beinners.

Also: The Dix Hills Chinese Cultural Association gives language lessons for all ages and skill levels 7-9:45 p.m. Friday evenings at Half Hollow Hills High School West. The evening includes two periods of language followed by a class on Chinese culture ($300 per semester, 631-882-3473 or e-mail principal@dhcca.org).
